Scented Candles
Burning a scented candle
Just ponder the following statement: "For every scent, there is a candle". Astonishing! That means there
are 500 to 800 fragrance chemicals and oils suitable for use in candles. You can thus at all times find
the right fragrance in your scented candle to fit of set the mood as well as satisfy your olfactory
senses - from your favorite candy, food or herb to the smells of the ocean.
Scented candles are not the same as aromatherapy
candles. Scent is one of the most powerful senses and different odors have an effect on people.
Aromatherapy candles on the other hand contain natural
essential oils that have physiological and therapeutic effects, as opposed to scents.
The fragrances in scented candles are varied and can be manufactured from either natural
and / or synthetic combinations of the candle fragrance oils typically used in other consumer products
such as perfumes, soaps and other personal hygiene products.
A Note of Caution:
- Burn your scented candle in a well-ventilated room:
A normal unscented candle releases water and carbon dioxide into the air; scented candles
release the fragrance as well. For people with allergies, some scented candles may cause a reaction,
but the fragrance itself is usually harmless.
- Check the wick of your scented candle:
A properly burning candle will produce little flicker and soot. The
candle wick should be trimmed to a quarter of an inch and
the scented candle should be placed away from drafts. Scented candles should not produce more soot
than unscented candles, so if those two conditions are met and you have a 'dirty' burn, it is
possible that the fragrance or the mixture of it with the wax is at fault.
